Cereus forbesii crested double meristem (WA Prohibited)
This is a rare and unique crested double meristem form where two active growth centres persist at the apex rather than consolidating into one. This double meristem behaviour produces paired crest lines, repeated splitting, and irregular folding as both growth centres continue to develop side by side.
In most crested cacti, growth eventually stabilises into a single dominant crest. In this form, both meristems remain active over time, which is uncommon and results in more complex, layered crest development rather than a single continuous fan. This sustained dual growth is what makes the mutation unusual and infrequently encountered.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright light with some direct sun once acclimated. Increase exposure gradually to avoid stress on new crested growth.
- Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry almost completely before watering again. Avoid water sitting in the folds of the crest.
- Media: Use a fast draining cactus mix with a high mineral content to maintain airflow around the roots.
- Fertiliser: Feed lightly during warmer months with a diluted cactus fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding during cooler periods.
- Temperature: Suited to warm conditions during active growth. Keep drier and protect from frost in winter.
- Repotting: Repot every few years as required. A heavier pot can help stabilise uneven or expanding crested growth.
